Richard Bale

Richard’s initial career was with London Transport, becoming IT Infrastructure Manager, London Buses. In 1987, he led the IT recovery of 30 bus garages following the London Hurricane, and was immediately made their Disaster Recovery Manager. He was responsible for LBL’s Recovery bus, which provided a mobile office complete with bus garage IT systems. Subsequently, he joined ACT Financial Systems, running their IT DR Service, and opening London’s only third Business Recovery Centre. After joining CAP-Recovery Services (later Sema Group Recovery Services) as the Head of Professional Services, he supported clients who had been impacted by the IRA bombings. In a lead consultant role, he delivered assignments across multiple sectors globally and participated in the build out of Recovery Centres across Europe, Asia and into America.

For the last twenty years Richard has been working at a senior management level within two major wholesale banks, leading both their BCM programs and crisis management. At BNP Paribas he was the Head of Business Continuity Management UK, and Service Continuity Management, France and UK.  At J.P. Morgan, he was the Corporate & Investment Bank’s Regional Head of Business Resiliency for Europe, Middle East and Africa, supporting 35 countries. Apart from managing complex BCM programs, he has been involved in responding to all the major events during this period, including the terrorist attacks of  9/11 (New York) and 7/7 (London); the SARS, Avian/Swine Flu pandemics; the London Olympics and the Paris Daesh attacks.

Richard is a Member of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) and has participated in many industry forums during his career. He was a board member of the Hewlett Packard Computer Users Association; and former Chairman of the IBM Business Recovery Services User Group. He is a founder member, and former Co-Chair, of the Securities Industries Business Continuity Management Group Ltd (SIBCMG), the organisation representing the business continuity interests of the major UK wholesale banking institutions. He participated in many UK Market Wide Scenario Exercises organised by the Bank of England, FSA/FCA and HM Treasury, including sitting on both the Scenario Design Committee and Steering Committee. In February 2020, Richard was interviewed on BBC World Business News on the best contingency measures to take in advance of COVID-19.
